Who or What Are You?

WHO ARE YOU?

Who are you? Do you really know? How would you answer that question? Would you say, I'm Robert and I'm a father, husband, son, brother, and an uncle. Well, those are descriptive names or titles. And I'm sure you don't consider yourself to be just a name, title, or a word. Would you say you're a product of your experiences? How would you answer the question, “Who are you?”

I've often thought about that and have come to think that it's possible that we have all forgotten who we really are; that we actually believe that we are the person that we think we are. In other words (in my case), I would actually believe that I am Alberto Trevino and nobody would be able to convince me otherwise.

I think that while in our mother's womb we are a ball of energy. Even after birth while clothed with a human body all we are is energy that's part of a whole. After birth we're conditioned by means of being taught what everything is, how to behave, how to talk, and walk, etc. All this information is piled upon us until there's layers and layers of information, of conditioning. There's so many layers upon us that we actually forget who or what we really are.

What would happen if all those layers of conditioning would be peeled off? What would we become? I suppose some would say we'd be in a vegetative state; not knowing a thing. I would say we'd be in absolute peace and in harmony with the universe.

Don't you sometimes feel, for maybe just a second, like as if everything and everybody is connected to you and you're connected to everything and everybody? I think that when we get those moments of enlightenment, we're getting a glimpse of our true nature; that we and everybody and everything else is ONE and the same – intelligent energy!

I believe that through deep meditation we can reach that objective of going deep within ourselves and realizing our real potential.

At night when you're dreaming, do you ever wonder what part of you is watching your dream? You are asleep in bed and you're dreaming about yourself doing something and some part of you is watching the dream. What part is that? Some will say, as the psychologist Pierre Janet, that it's the subconscious operating in the mind beyond conscious awareness. I believe that is our real self. The one that is always watching, not reacting in any way to anything, just watching.

This probably sounds absolutely weird to anyone that has never meditated or studied Eastern religions, so I ask you to look into this subject some more. Maybe you'll be able to enlighten me!

Alberto, great hub! However, being a Christian, I have a hard time following the concept of "energy" as my state of being. You do however raise excellent quandries about who we really are and I guess that depends a lot on who (or what) we want to be. In my opinion, belief systems are crucially inportant to this role. "Cogito, ergo sum".

This is a wonderful hub. In Zen Buddhism it is called 'original mind' or wild mind, and it's all about getting your mind back to that original state you talk about and letting conditioning and thought fall away. It can be really hard to just be present right now without a zillion thoughts running through my head, but if I can manage it, then it does seem obvious that we are all connected to each other and to everything else. Thank you for writing this. It's really good. I agree with what you say here 100%.

arak1547 thanks for you comment. I wonder if plants and all animals are able to think, but whether they can or not they still "are".
